Emergent Capabilities

Abilities that arise unexpectedly in AI models as they scale in size or training data, not present in smaller versions of the same model. Examples include chain-of-thought reasoning and multi-step problem-solving in large language models. Emergent capabilities complicate safety testing as they are difficult to predict or plan for.
