Risk Tier

A classification of AI systems based on their potential for harm, used to determine applicable governance requirements. The EU AI Act uses four tiers: unacceptable risk (prohibited), high risk (strict requirements), limited risk (transparency obligations), and minimal risk (voluntary codes). The NIST AI RMF and other frameworks use similar risk-based approaches.
